What does "trail rated" mean?

Postby long » Tue Jan 22, 2013 6:30 pm

I always see newer Jeeps with decals on the fenders that say "Trail Rated". What does that mean? Who rates them? On which trails?

I'll guarantee that the trails I wheel on are different than trails in other parts of the country. Around here we're not rock crawlers or desert runners like you guys out west. We're farmers, hunters and fisherman and while we have plenty of mud, it's not the same kind as in the swamps and bayous in the south.

It doesn't mean much really....just a marketing gimmick.

It's mainly so the people who buy them to be "mall crawlers" think they are tough off roaders.

In 2004 Jeep started using a special “Trail Rated” badge on certain Jeep vehicles to mark that vehicle trail worthy according to Jeep’s specifications. The vehicles holding a Trail Rated status are Wrangler, Liberty, and Grand Cherokee. Jeep has established a base line of qualities that dictates what makes a vehicle trail worthy.

I'm not sure it means a whole lot. My 2006 Liberty Limited 4X4 3.7 has the Trail Rated badges on it, but then so do all the 2006 Wrangler Rubicons. Which one do you think should be trail rated? My Liberty goes pretty good off road but it's sure no Rubicon.

"Trail rated" does not mean bullet proof . If you abuse it something is gonna break .
It just means they took them out and they performed above average under extreme conditions .
