If your idle fluctuates up and down at idle, you have a vacuum leak, which will also cause you to burn more gas.

Get a can of starter fluid or a can of propane. Spray the starting fluid or release the propane near all your vacuum hoses. If the RPM goes up, then you have found your leak.

You can manually adjust your idle without too much work. Find your owners manual, and then find your Idler.

Turn it down. Each car is a little different, so if you have problems, find someone you know that understands cars. This is one of the easiest problems to fix.
